Gallbladder Removal: Assessment and Recovery

Cholecystectomy is an operation to remove the gallbladder. The reason for surgery, your symptoms and test results determine the proposed approach and timing.

Why surgery may be discussed

Gallstones or other gallbladder problems may cause symptoms or complications. Ask the surgeon to explain the diagnosis, the expected benefit of removing the gallbladder and whether there are alternatives.

What to ask about the operation

Laparoscopic surgery is commonly discussed, but an open operation or a change of approach may be needed in some circumstances. Ask about anaesthesia, bile-duct injury, bleeding, infection and further procedures.

Recovery and warning signs

Follow the discharge instructions for wounds, medicines, eating, activity and reviews. Increasing abdominal pain, fever, jaundice, persistent vomiting or other unexpected deterioration needs prompt medical assessment.

Planning treatment

Tell your clinician about previous treatment, health conditions, all medicines and supplements, and allergies. Ask for individual preparation, recovery and warning-sign instructions. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.

Confirm the proposed clinician and facility, appointment date, investigations, itemised costs and follow-up arrangements before booking travel. Diagnosis and suitability may require an in-person examination.
