Cosmetic surgeries like Brazilian butt lift are increasingly becoming popular among people in many countries, including Iran. Technically known as gluteoplasty, buttock enhancement procedure is being performed in Iran using different techniques.
The three main techniques for butt augmentation in Iran are butt lift with fat transfer (fat grafting), commonly known as Brazilian butt lift or BBL, traditional butt lift, and buttocks augmentation with butt implants.
Types of buttock enhancement procedures
Each person considering a buttocks enhancement procedure have their own needs and expectations. That is why it is important to explain the difference between the main types of this procedure.
· Brazilian butt lift (BBL)
The Brazilian buttock lift is the most popular cosmetic butt enhancement procedure, which is rapidly gaining in popularity. Often shortened to BBL, it is a fat grafting procedure that uses the excess fat of your own body to improve the fullness and contour of your buttocks.
Many people think that Brazilian butt lift is similar to the traditional butt lift (explained below) only because of the similar names they have, but in fact, they are two quite different procedures. A Brazilian butt lift involves extracting unwanted fat from other parts of your body, such as the love handles, thighs and abdomen through liposuction procedure and re-injecting it into the buttocks after purifying it using a centrifuge.
Depending on the surgeon’s techniques and your desired results, the number, depth and amount of injection is different, but as a whole, a greater number of smaller injections produces a better result. Also, since a great portion of the injected fat will be absorbed by the body over time, the surgeon injects as much fat as possible so that the final long-term result be still satisfactory for the patient.
· Traditional butt lift
The traditional butt lift surgery is aimed at removing the excess sagging skin of the buttocks in order to tighten the area. It is recommended for those people who have a droopy butt and want to get a tighter backside with a more youthful appearance. One important point is that a traditional butt does not improve the buttocks by adding volume to them. Rather, it enhances the shape of a person’s rears by removing and lifting up the droopy skin and tissue.
It is worth noting that a Brazilian buttock lift can be done at the same time as a traditional butt lift. It means that if you wish to get rid of the droopy skin of your derriere before getting it enlarged, you can have the two procedures combined in a single surgery appointment.
· Butt implants
The third type of buttocks enhancement procedure is augmentation with butt implants. These silicone implants are specially made to be implanted into the buttocks to make them fullers and shapelier. Butt implants are the best option for people who are unhappy with the size of their buttocks but do not have enough excess fat for a butt augmentation with fat grafting or Brazilian butt lift.
Because of the greater chance of developing complications in butt implants than Brazilian butt lift (including the possibility of malposition and infection), the latter is recommended for people with excessive fat deposits.
How is a BBL done?
There are three main steps in a Brazilian butt lift procedure:
- Liposuction: removing fat from areas with fat deposits (abdomen, thighs, lower back, love handles, hips, etc.) through a liposuction process
- Purification: the extracted fat is purified with a centrifuge in order to keep only the healthy fat cells
- Injection: the purified fat is then injected into specific areas on the buttocks with a cannula to increase their volume and fullness
A Brazilian buttock lift is usually an outpatient procedure without the patient having to stay in hospital overnight. A BBL surgery can be done under general or local anesthesia, depending on how many areas on the body are involved in the liposuction procedure.
How is a butt lift performed?
A traditional butt lift involves making incisions on the top of the bottom, hips, groin, or lower part of the buttocks to remove excess sagging skin, lifting up the buttocks and tightening the skin. The surgeon may also use liposuction on the so-called ‘gluteal fold’ (also called gluteal smile line) to remove the crease and create a better contour.
The incisions are then closed and stitched up and a drain may be placed to remove any excess fluid or blood. The surgical area is finally dressed and a compression garment or girdle is applied to minimize bruising and swelling and keep the buttocks in place to prevent any reshaping before complete healing.
Butt implant procedure
Butt implants are placed through incisions that are made along the gluteal fold, on the top of the buttocks, or on the inner side of the buttocks, depending on which technique the surgeons is more comfortable with.
Risks of Brazilian butt lift
The most dangerous complication of a BBL procedure is fat embolism, a fatal condition caused by fat particles passing into the bloodstream and blocking the blood flow.
Other potential complications of a Brazilian buttock lift are bruising, stretch marks, infection, blood clots, bleeding, deep vein thrombosis, fat and tissue necrosis, and complications associated with anesthesia.
These complications often occur when the surgeon performing a BBL surgery lacks enough training and experience in this procedure and doesn’t have a firm grasp of the functional system of the body.
Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon with significant experience in fat transfer procedures is the most important step in reducing the risk of complications after a BBL procedure. A well-trained BBL surgeon is quite familiar with a number of issues, including:
- How much fat can be safely removed from a specific area
- Where the fat can be injected safely
- How deep the fact can be safely injected
- How much fat should be injected
- Routine surgical safety precautions and hygiene practices
Butt implants complications
The risks and side effects associated with buttock implants are bleeding, pain, bruising, scarring, skin discoloration, infection, implant displacement, asymmetry in buttocks, fluid accumulation, allergic reactions, and anesthesia-related complications. Most of these complications, however, rarely happen and if you choose the right surgeon and follow the post-op instructions, the chance of developing them can be greatly reduced.
Risks of butt lift surgery
A traditional butt lift procedure might cause the following complications:
- Fluid accumulation under the skin (seroma), which can be prevented by placing drainage tubes after surgery or removing the fluid with a syringe.
- Poor wound healing
- Scarring
- Changes in skin sensation (temporary)
- Infection
