Health Check-ups: Choosing Tests for Your Needs

A useful health assessment is tailored to your age, symptoms, history and risk factors. A large package of tests is not automatically better than targeted clinical advice.

Start with the purpose

Explain whether you have symptoms, a known condition, a screening question or a work-related requirement. A clinician can distinguish diagnostic testing from screening and advise which investigations are useful.

Benefits and limitations

Tests can produce uncertain results, false alarms or findings that need additional investigation. Ask what a result would change, what further tests might be needed and whether there are risks from the investigation itself.

What to bring

  • A list of health concerns and family history.
  • Current medicines and supplements.
  • Earlier reports and test results.
  • Any instructions from a clinician who will use the results.

Plan the follow-up

Confirm who will interpret the results, how you receive them and what happens if something needs further assessment. A check-up package does not replace urgent care for new or severe symptoms.
